Why reporting layers get quietly abandoned about six months in, and the structural reason it keeps happening.

Natalie Meurer spent five years building deployed systems inside one of the more demanding software companies in the world. Her talk this summer was mostly a history of a job title. One line in it is worth pinning above a desk.

“A dashboard that doesn’t write back to the data source isn’t that useful. These things would decay over time and actually not be as useful as they could be.”

She was describing something built years ago. The finding has aged extremely well.

Why read-only rots

A screen that only reports has nobody whose day depends on it being right.

The person who could correct a wrong number is looking at a different system, the one they actually work in. So the wrong number stays. A month later there are five of them. A quarter later everyone has quietly agreed the reporting is out of date, and the meeting runs off a spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand.

Nothing broke. There was no outage to investigate. The thing simply stopped being trusted, which is worse, because there is no alert for that.

What writing back actually means

The screen you read and the screen you work in are the same screen.

Mark the job complete where you read that it was late. Fix the wrong address at the moment you notice it, in the place you noticed it. Reporting stays accurate as a side effect of the work getting done, rather than as a separate chore nobody owns.

Underneath that sits one rule we build everything on.

One database. Many surfaces. Every screen reads from the same definition of the work. Change it once and it is true everywhere. That is what stops a system rotting as it grows.

The test

Look at whatever reporting your business runs on now, and ask one question. When somebody spots something wrong on that screen, can they fix it there?

If the answer is no, you already know roughly how long it has left.
